And so it is, regarding suspending the privilege to gather for worship. But first impressions not withstanding, these are not dark times for the Church. It has been said, "The enemy of the Church is apathy." History teaches us that the Church was strongest during the times of persecution or crisis. Conversely, a sleepy, self-satisfied Church rots on the vine. Right now, spirituality, we are working for our faith. I feel this work will make us stronger. During WW2 a lots of Jews became seamstresses and dressmakers. My great aunts made dresses for the wealthy. The rich were forced to pay the asking price. That's how we feed our families. Everlasting life as "an othe...Well said Rich. Everlasting life as "an other world" is of little relevance when one is caught up in the drudgery of the day-to-day, as you say. But the truth is that everlasting life is a reality that has begin in our lives and in the world we live in. We enter into everlasting life when we are baptized. We then feast on everlasting life in Word and Sacrament on Sunday morning so as to enact everlasting life during the other six-and-a-half days. The work we do in feeding the hungry, befriending the lonely, forgiving sins, etc. enacts eternal life, so that the world may see the salvation Christ is bringing. And we ourselves get a foretaste of that everlasting life as we take part in Christ's healing of the world.

The call to discipleship is the call to join Christ in establishing that reality and bearing witness to the real and true hope we have in him.

I fear that sometimes, the emphasis placed on eternal life within our culture grows out of an escapist theology-- with Christianity being the means of escape. Christ is active in THIS world-- he is not absent from it. His body lives in the proclamation of Word and sacrament, and his saving work continues in and through us-- and in spite of us.Pastor Jim Arterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11647347449022433321noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3035914480005155439.post-12828445808572833872012-09-11T10:21:00.622-07:002012-09-11T10:21:00.622-07:00This came to mind during the sermon. I apologize ...This came to mind during the sermon. I apologize if it is slightly off topic but it does influence how i view serving others. Sometimes I am bothered by all of the talk in church about "life everlasting." I realize that it is the "good news" but why does it matter? Grace gives us the gift of everlasting life just like the gift of our daily lives. We don't do good because we want to earn it as that is not possible. We should do good because it is the right thing to do... Everlasting life is neither the reward, reason, or motivation. Since it has no active bearing on our lives as Christians, why do we focus on it so often? Shouldn't we be focused on spreading the love of Christ outside the figurative carrot at the end of the stick? rmuthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16445411181811872223noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3035914480005155439.post-50427340276698006452011-09-22T16:23:21.003-07:002011-09-22T16:23:21.003-07:00I have been thinking a lot about both the children...I have been thinking a lot about both the children's and congregation sermons. I found it very interesting when you described the daily wage as the ability to buy daily food. As each of us associate with the workers who completed a full day of labor, it seems contrite that we would complain that anyone received their daily bread...or that we would demand more bread than what we agreed to receive.

I did even more thinking on "it's not fair". In our capitalist orientation we believe that the harder we work the more we will receive. We all know people who don't work as hard as they should (or as hard as we do). We expect to earn more and be rewarded for our hard work. "show me the money" is a soundbite that we all understand. I admit that I may not complain too much if I worked all day and got the same amount as someone who worked much less...but come the next day I would be pushing for a more favorable pay amount. And in pondering this I feel like I continue to fail in learning the lesson of this parable...

It took a while but I am gradually coming around. In the spirit of parables, I changed the way I thought of the lesson to personalize it to me. What if the employer was God? The laborers are the people of God. "Wages" instead of being something tangible were instead "forgiveness of sin". Different people work harder than others to follow the commandments of God... And as a Christian I am very glad that God treats us all equally by forgiving our sins. Instead of identifying with an employee who is angry about being treated the same, I now give thanks that in God's wisdom he forgives me an unfair amount of my overly sinful self. I can now associate myself with a worker who did only an hour of work and boy am I thankful that we all are treated fairly.rmuthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16445411181811872223noreply@blogger.com
